Victoria
1849 to 1901
Values, images, and specifications for British
florin (two shillings) coins from 1849 to 1901.
Victoria became Queen in
1837 after the death of her
uncle (William IV), who had
no legitimate heirs.
The first Queen Victoria
United Kingdom florin
was minted in 1849, and
the last in 1901.
The Queen Victoria era UK florin obverse features Victoria facing left.
Early to middle years feature the young Victoria, the reverse showing
four crowned shields in cruciform, first with the 'godless' legend in 1849, changing to 'gothic' type-face legends from 1852. The 'jubilee head'
obverse was introduced in 1887, the reverse showing four crowned
shields in cruciform, with sceptres in the diagonals. The design changed
to the 'veiled head' obverse in 1893, the reverse showing three shields
with two sceptres diagonally behind and crown above, inside a garter.
Victoria was the longest reigning British monarch at
nearly 64 years, until topped by Elizabeth II in 2015.
Victoria married Albert in 1840. The pair had 9 children,
who went on to marry in to royalty across Europe.
Victoria entered a protracted period of mourning
following Albert's death in 1861, lasting many years.
The Victorian era was one of dramatic change and
development in industry, science, culture, and politics.
