The penny ran until 1965,
when New Zealand stopped
having pre-decimal coins
minted in preparation
for decimilisation in 1967.
The New Zealand penny obverse features the United
Kingdom monarch of the time.
The reverse shows a tui bird perched on a blossoming
kowhai branch. The words 'NEW ZEALAND ONE PENNY'
surround the main design, with the date below.
Prior to 1933 United Kingdom currency
was the official legal tender of New Zealand,
although Australian coins and notes were
also generally accepted.
1 penny = 1/12 of a shilling
= 1/240 of a pound
