Australia
shilling
KEVII & KGV
1910 to 1936
Values, images, and specifications for Australian
shilling coins from 1910 to 1936.
Upon the death of Victoria in 1901,
her son, Edward VII, became king.
The first Australian shilling was
minted in 1910, under Edward VII.
Edward VII died in 1910, passing
the throne to his son, George V.
The first King George V era
Australian shilling was minted
in 1911, and the last in 1936.
The King Edward VII era Australian shilling obverse features the
crowned bust of Edward VII facing right, while the King George V era
Australian shilling shows the crowned bust of George V facing left.
The reverse shows the words 'ONE SHILLING' above the Australian
Coat of Arms, where a kangaroo stands to the left, and an emu to the
right, supporting a shield with a star above.
Underneath is a scroll with 'ADVANCE AUSTRALIA', then the date below.
Having been 'heir apparent' for 59 years under
Victoria, Edward VII did not spend a long time at
the throne, however was generally well received
by the public.
George V's reign spanned a period that included
'The Great War', now known as 'The First World War', and 'The Great Depresssion'.
12 pennies = 1 shilling = 1/20 of a pound
